BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – Are you tired of the same old cardio routine? If so, give jump rope a try.
“All you need is a jump rope. It’s super simple. If you’re not used to jump roping, if it’s been a long time, some of the ones with little beads on them tend to be a little bit easier to control because the weight of the beads is going to pull the jump rope around for you.”
YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery said once you get the hang of it, jump rope exercises are packed with multiple benefits.
“It’s great for cardiovascular endurance, for coordination, it increases bone density, it’s a ton of fun and it’s a great calorie burner. It’s a lot less strenuous than jogging. It does put a little bit of strain on your lower body joints, so if you have any ankle issues you might want to consult your doctor first.”
Atterbery says said one of the best benefits about jumping rope is the variety.
“If you want to keep it super simple just jump roping with two feet is still a really good exercise. But you can give it a little bit of a variety by going just on one foot, then you switch to the other, doing your feet in and out. You can jump around the room depending on the mount of space that you have. So there is a good variety of what you can do even if you’re in just one space.”
Another benefit of jump rope exercises, you can jump rope pretty much anywhere.
“You can take this anywhere you go. You can put it in a suitcase, it can go in a backpack, you can travel with it and you need very little space,” said Atterbery.
Atterbery said it’s also affordable.
“I mean even a nice speed rope you’re only looking at $15-$20 so it’s very affordable. It’s portable all you need is enough space for it to clear about a foot over your head and you can do it pretty much anywhere.”
